A Brief History of the International Circle of Korean Linguistics

2008 : 제16차 학술대회가 2008년 6월 26일부터 28일까지 미국 뉴욕주립대-빙햄턴과 코넬대학에서 공동개최로 열렸다. 국제한국언어학회 33년 역사상 최초로 공동개최가 된 것이다. 70편 이상의 논문발표와 4편의 초청강연이 있었다. 구결발표회가 특히 인상적이었다. 예년 대회에 비해 발표된 논문의 질이 괄목할 만하게 향상된 대회로 평가되었다.
The 16th ICKL conference was co-hosted by SUNY-Binghamton and Cornell University, USA on June 26 to 28. For thirty-three years of ICKL history, the conference venue was split for the first time. Over 70 papers and four invited talks (Gregory Iverson, William O’Grady, James Yoon, and Yoonjung Kang) were presented. The Gugyeol sessions feature the current conference. Every body agrees that the quality of the presented papers was significantly improved compared to the level at the previous gatherings.

2007 : 2007년 6월 20-21 홍콩성시대 (City University of Hong Kong)에서 열린 The 4th Interim Metting of ICKL: International Conference on Korean Language, Culture and Soceity에서 15편의 논문을 발표하였다.

2006 : 제15회 국제한국언어학회가 2006년 7월 10일부터 13일까지 멕시코 과달라하라 자치대학에서 열렸다. 100여명의 참가자와 58편의 논문발표가 있었다. 대회 후 Korean Linguistics 제13권과 Inquiries into Korean Linguistics II를 발간하였다.
The 15th International Conference on Korean Linguisticswas was held in Quadalajara, Mexico, with 54 paper presenters and 80 participants. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 13 appears. Inquiries into Korean Linguistics II also appears.

2005 : 정기 학회 중간의 홀수년에도 작은 모임을 갖도록 하는 것만 아니라, 학회 창립 30주년을 기념하여 인도 공화국 뉴델리의 네루 대학교에서 창립기념 국제학술대회 개최.(30th Anniversary Conference of International Circle of Korean Linguistics, October 8, 2005, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) 10월 8일 30여 명의 학자가 참가하여 15편의 논문을 발표.. 한국내 회원들의 용이한 참석을 위하여 학회 창립 30주년을 또 한번 기념, 대한민국 서울의 서울대학교에서 창립기념 국내학술대회 개최. 10월 22일 50여 명의 학자가 참가하여 회고를 겸한 기념사를 포함하여 10편의 논문을 발표.. 이 논문들 및 터키, 인도의 논문들도 모아 국제한국언어학회 창립 30주년 기념논문집 ‘촘스키의 최소주의 이론 및 최적성 이론의 한국어에의 적용’(Chomsky's Minimalist Program and OT applied to Korean) 발간.
To hold a small mid-term conference between the biennial conferences, and also to celebrate the 30th anniversary of ICKL there were two meetings in October 2005. The first one was organized as ICKL-JNU New Delhi International Conference on Korean Linguistics, 8 October and ICKL-SNU Seoul International Conference on Korean Linguistics, 22 October. The 30th Anniversary Publication of ICKL: Chomsky's Minimalist Program and OT applied to Korean.

2004 : 제 14 회 국제 한국 언어학회, 터키 공화국, 안탈타에서 개최. 7월 12일부터 15일까지 80여명의 학자가 54편의 논문 발표. Korean Linguistics 12 권 발간. Inquiries into Korean Linguistics I 발간.
The 14th International Conference on Korean Linguistics was held in Antalya, Turkey, with 54 paper presenters and 80 participants. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 12 appears in 2004. Inquiries into Korean Linguistics I also appears.

2003 : 이상억 회장이 회원들의 요망에 따라, 짝수년에만 개최해 왔던 정기 학회 중간의 홀수년에도 작은 모임을 갖도록 하여, 과거 회원들이 2년마다 만남으로 해서 소원해지던 관계를 좀 더 긴밀하게 하기로 하였다. 이에 따라 국제 한국 언어학회의 첫 번째 중간 모임인 ICKL-TUB International Conference on Korean &/or Corpus Linguistics를 독일 베를린 과학기술대(Technical University at Berlin)에서 2003년 7월 21-22일에 개최. 40명 이상의 학자가 참가하여 25편 논문 발표.
Sang-Oak Lee proposed to hold a small mid-term conference between the biennial conferences, since there were concerns that its members were becoming unfamiliar because the regular meeting is held every even-numbered year. Then he organized the first interim meeting: ICKL-TU Berlin International Conference on Korean &/or Corpus Linguistics, 21-22 July 2003.

2000 : 제 12회 국제 한국 언어학회, 체코 공화국, Praha에서 개최. 학회 참석 최다 인원 기록, 240명 참석, 170편 논문 발표. Korean Linguistics 11 권 발간.
The 12th International Conference on Korean Linguistics, Praha, Czech Republic. A record number of attendance, with 170 paper presenters and 240 participants. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 11 appears.

1998 : 제 11회 국제 한국 언어학회, Honolulu의 Hawaii 대학과 공동 개최. 100명 이상의 참석자에게 59편의 논문 발표. Korean Linguistics 10권 발간.

1992 : 300명 이상의 정회원, 즉 회비를 납부하는 회원 확보. 거의 모든 정회원이 박사학 위 소지자이거나 대학원 학생임. 제 8회 국제 한국 언어학회, Washington DC의 George Washington 대학과 공 동 개최. 한국어 표기 체계에 대한 특별 학회 구성. 특별 학회에서 15편의 초청 논문 발 표 및 일반 학회에서 62편의 논문 발표. 특별 강연회와 학회에 130명 이상 참석. 학회와 더불어, “세종대왕: 15세기 한국의 빛”이라는 제목의 특별 전시회 개 최. 소식지 6, 7, 8, 9호 발간. Korean Linguistics 7권 발간.
There are more than 300 members in good standing, i.e., those who have paid their current membership dues. Almost all of them are Ph.D. holders or advanced graduate students. The 8th International Conference on Korean Linguistics is co-hosted by The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. A special symposium on the Korean Writing System is organized for the conference. In addition to 15 invited papers presented at the special symposium on the Korean writing system, there are 62 papers in the general session. Over 130 participate in the Conference and Symposium. Concurrent with the conference, a special exhibit on King Sejong the Great: The Light of Fifteenth Century Korea is presented at GW. Newsletter, Numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9 are produced. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 7 appears.

1991 : 소식지 4호와 5호를 재발간 시작. [3호 이후 소식들은 학회장의 편지 형태로 전달되었다. 학회장이 평균 4~5번의 소식지를 발송했었다.]
Newsletter is revived with Number 4 and 5. [NB: Since the issue number 3, news went out in the form of presidents' letters. Each president of the Circle sent about four or five messages on average.]

1990 : 제 7회 국제 한국 언어학회, 오사카 경제-법과대학과 공동 개최. 100명 이상의 참석자에게 59편의 논문 발표. Korean Linguistics 6권 발간. 제 7회 ICKL 학회 발표 논문집 (Proceedings) 출 판.
The Seventh International Conference on Korean Linguistics, co-hosted by the Osaka University of Economics and Law. Fifty nine papers were presented to an audience of more than one hundred. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 6 and The 7th ICKL, proceedings of the conference, are published.

1988 : 제 6회 국제 한국 언어학회, 캐나다의 Toronto 대학과 공동 개최. 80여명의 참석, 61편의 논문 발표. Korean Linguistics 5권 발간. 제 6회 ICKL 학회 발표 논문집 (Proceedings) 출 판.
The Sixth International Conference on Korean Linguistics, co-hosted by the University of Toronto, Canada. Sixty one papers were presented to an audience of eighty. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 5 appears. The 6th ICKL, proceedings of the conference, is published.

1986 : 제 5회 국제 한국 언어학회, Utah주, Provo의 Brigham Young 대학과 공동 개최. 50여명의 참석, 30편의 논문 발표. Korean Linguistics 4권 발간
The Fifth International Conference on Korean Linguistics, co-hosted by Brigham Young University, Provo. UT. About thirty papers were presented to an audience of fifty. Korean Linguistics, Vol. 4 appears.

1984 : 제 4회 국제 한국 언어학회, 독일의 Bochum 대학과 공동 개최. 100여명의 참석, 37편의 논문 발표.
The Fourth International Conference on Korean Linguistics, co-hosted by Bochum Universitat, Germany. Thirty seven papers presented to an audience of about one hundred.

1983 : Korean Linguistics 3권 발간

1982 : 제 3회 국제 한국 언어학회, 하와이 대학과 공동 개최. 50~60여명의 참석자에게 30여편의 논문 발표.
The Third International Conference on Korean Linguistics, co-hosted by the University of Hawaii. About thirty papers were presented to an audience of about fifty to sixty.

1980 : Korean Linguistics 2권 발간

1979 : 제 2회 국제 한국언어학회, Fairbank의 알래스카 대학과 공동 개최. 30여명의 참석자에게 25편의 논문 발표.
The Second International Conference on Korean Linguistics, co-hosted by the University of Alaska, Fairbank. Twenty five papers were presented to an audience of about thirty.

1978 : 학회지 Korean Linguistics 1권 발간.
The first volume of the Circle's official journal, Korean Linguistics, is published.

1977 : The Linguistic Society of America Summer Institute와 함께 제 1회 국제 한국 언어학회를 Honolulu의 Hawaii 대학에서 개최. 60여명의 청중에게 33편의 논문 발표. 소식지 3호 발간.
The First International Symposium on Korean Linguistics is held in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America Summer Institute at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu. Thirty three papers are presented to an audience of about sixty. Newsletter, number three appears.

1976 : 공식 학회 소식지 1호와 2호 발간
The Circle's official Newsletter, number one and number two appear.

1975 : 북미 한국 언어학회를 조직하기 위한 특별 준비 회의의 회장인 알래스카 대학 구장회(Dr. Jang (John) H. Koo)가 회원들에게 10월 20일자 공지를 통해 학회 결성을 발표. 19명의 회원으로 시작하여 곧 27명으로 증가.
